Montana is a state with a relatively low rate of serial killers. According to the Serial Killer Information Center, there have only been a handful of confirmed serial killers in Montana.
One of the most notorious cases is that of Wayne Nance, who committed a series of murders and burglaries in and around Missoula from 1974-1986. He is believed to have killed six people, although his exact victim count is unknown. Nance was shot and killed by one of his intended victims in 1986.
Another notable case is that of David Meirhofer, who killed three young women in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was caught and confessed to the murders in 1974 and committed suicide in prison the same year.
Other serial killers in Montana include Michael Keith Spell, who along with Lester Van Waters Jr. abducted and killed teacher Sherry Arnold in 2012, and Thomas Lee Dillon, who killed four people in the 1980s.
